PRETEND

Real life conversation with my soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter.

I am a wimp when it comes to pretending.

Heartbreak

My son had his first lesson in heartbreak this week when his preschool ended. He loved that school, but it couldn’t go on forever.
It’s an important life lesson to have—after all, everything comes to an end eventually. As a dad, watching him grow up and learn this lesson was kind of bittersweet.

Paternity Leave

THE BEST PART OF HAVING A SON: GARAGE GUNFIGHTS!
THE BEST PART OF HAVING A DAUGHTER: HAIR STYLIN' TIME!

THE BEST PART OF HAVING A BABY: NEWBORN SMELL!!

Dudes and Dudettes,

Sorry for the radio silence. I've been at home with my family spending some quality time with OUR NEW BABY!! I'm back at work now, but I did get to take a couple of weeks of paternity leave which was amazing. You guys, if you haven't had a baby you should definitely give it a try. I mean after you get married, that is. Let's not get carried away here. Anyway, babies are seriously the BEST.

Things at home are super busy these days, but I'll try to check in with new doodles when I can. Until then be good, everyone!

Holiday Sketches

I know this is ostensibly a sketch blog. I thought I'd post some actual sketchbook pages, you know, to keep up appearances. This is how we spent our holiday yesterday. Can't think of a better way to spend a day off.

What do you guys do on your day off?

The Big News

I know this won’t make everything better, but I thought it might help begin the healing process.

Movember Rain

My Movember mustache has been frightening my children. Luckily the month is over, and we are all a little more aware of men's health issues.

Holdens on the Move!

Guess what, everybody?  We're moving to Oregon!  These past couple of years at DreamWorks has been amazing and leaving is bittersweet, but opportunity has come a'knocking and we are northward bound.  I'm very excited to be starting at Laika soon and I hope to be back on my bicycle and posting more cartoons when we get settled in.

Take care of the internet while I'm gone!  (And don't forget to feed the fish.)

Magic Tofu

My family stayed on vacation in Washington without me.  I miss them.  Especially at dinner time.  The most interesting things happen at our dinner table.

Happy Mother's Day!

I'm a day late, but that's because we were busy having a memorable Mother's Day at our house yesterday.

Thank you, Allison, for being the wonderful mother of my two little monkeys!

You may not have known this, but my wife is also a world-class vegan chef.  I know, because raising children wasn't enough of an accomplishment.  Yeah, she's amazing like that.

In Your Eyes

Abiline is talking more and more these days.  Judging by her smart mouth, she's taking cues from her brother.

Bonus points if you can guess my real eye color.

Christmas Cheer

It feels like it's been far too long since I've posted comics.  My kids continue to say really funny things, so I thank them for writing my material.  Actually, it's mostly my son Sawyer.  Lately the only thing I hear my daughter say is "boppoli!" (Her favorite food is broccoli.  This is what happens when you raise vegan babies.)

(click comics to bigify)

I generally don't approve of the F-word, but it's pretty cute when you hear a 3 year old say it.  And with such sincerity.

In 30 years you will, Sawyer.  Then who will be laughing?

Hope this Season is bright for all!
