Cops and Robbers

Since Dave Pimentel left DreamWorks awhile back, Rad Sechrist and I have taken over his post as instructors of the biweekly gesture drawing class.  It's been an awesome and humbling experience, both to follow in Dave's footsteps, and to learn from Rad while teaching with him.  Here are some drawings that I made during last Wednesday's session.

I begin with these quickie warm-ups, usually under or around a minute.  These end up being some of my favorite drawings of the day--no time to fuss, only enough time to get a feeling down.

Lucky day!  We happen to have a lithe, angular model--which is great because I feel like drawing with straights, and only straights
(possibly as a remnant of having made these drawings a few days prior).

Then we get into some "longer" two-minute poses.  By this point, I'm becoming more and more interested in the graphic qualities of the costume,
sometimes completely ignoring the rest of the figure.

wow these are really cool! there's just something about black and white sketches that makes me feel so inspired. A lot of times, I feel like adding color to a drawing just takes away from the emotion and drama in the sketch.

Once again, I think these are really inspiring :) love looking at your work!

I love your original approach to figure drawing. The ones toward the bottom are incomplete though. JK. Awesome!

Loads of life in these!
I'm curious, as I teach life drawing at an art college in Dublin, but is it by choice that the model is clothed or is it a caveat of hosting the class within Dreamworks? Most of my classes are nude, though it can be great to use fabrics or costumes to add some graphic shapes and accentuate or contrast the models form.
I was also wondering if most of you guys work in pen like this, or if there are any old fogeys like meself that get covered in charcoal dust? I know Stanchfield was a big supporter of the pen work, and you seem to be following in his fine tradition.
Looking forward to seeing your next batch!!

Cool! I've never seen sketches that omit the figure in favor of the clothing. I like it.

Thanks for the kind words, all.

@Eimhin, the classes at DreamWorks are multiple and varied. The biweekly class I co-teach is a costumed gesture class, but there are nude classes as well. We have painting and drawing classes with both extended and short poses. The students come and work in the medium of their choice; many draw with sharpies or other markers, but there are quite a few who prefer pencil, conte, or nupastel.

Hey Anthony! Can't believe I haven't seen these yet! Very cool how you captured the gesture and the folds of the clothing etc. I enjoyed it very much!
